BYD Han Tire Pressure Monitoring System
Your BYD Han uses a direct tire pressure monitoring system. This means that it uses a tire pressure sensor in each wheel to monitor and report the current tire pressures to the driver.
BYD Han Tire Pressure Sensors
Within each tire of the BYD Han, a plastic case houses a tire pressure sensor, consisting of a chip, a battery, and a radio transmitter. A valve stem is connected to the plastic housing. This chip is powered by the battery and it gauges the tire’s air pressure. The transmitter then communicates this information to the BYD’s Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) receiver module using radio signals.
BYD Han TPMS Receiver Module
Positioned within the BYD Han this receiver module collects the air pressure data transmitted from each tire sensor. It then forwards this data to the vehicle’s primary control unit, referred to as either the Engine Control Unit (ECU) or the Engine Control Module (ECM).
BYD Han ECU
The ECU in the BYD Han processes the received tire pressure information and compares it to the manufacturer’s recommended air pressure levels. If the ECU recognizes a tire’s air pressure is 75% or more below the recommended 250 kPa (36 psi), a low tire pressure alert is triggered.
Steps to Reset BYD Han Tire Pressure Light
Fill all 4 tires to 250 kPa/36 Psi.
Select the INFO button on the top of the information display screen.
Select STATUS.
Select RESET next to “Tyre Pressure”.
Drive the BYD Han for 5 minutes at speeds exceeding 25 Mph (40Kph)
How to Access the Tire Pressure On the Instrument Cluster
Press the MENU button on the steering wheel.
Use the Left and Right arrow buttons to navigate to the DRIVING INFORMATION bar.
Use the Right arrow button and select Tire Pressure using the roller on the button.
BYD Han Tire Pressure Alerts
Anytime any tire is below 188 kPa or 27 Psi (75% of 250 kPa/36 Psi), the tire pressure fault warning will turn on and the tire pressure value on the display screen will change to yellow.
If any tire temperature exceeds 85 degrees celsius for more than 3 minutes, the BYD Han will display a High Temperature alarm. This will cause the tire pressure value on the display screen to change to Yellow. Pull over and wait for the tire to cool down before driving.
If a tire is losing air and the BYD Han is On, the tire pressure fault warning light will flash and the corresponding tire pressure value on the display screen will turn RED.
If your information display reads “Abnormal Signal” or “Please check the tire pressure monitoring system” and the tire pressure light is flashing and then solid, this implies there is a malfunction within the BYD Han’s TPMS. A TPMS malfunction occurs when one or more tire pressure sensors are no longer communicating with the vehicle’s TPMS module or ECM/ECU/BCM.
Byd Han Flashing Low Tire Light
If the BYD Han tire pressure light is flashing, the tire pressure monitoring system is malfunctioning. This usually happens for one of 3 reasons:
A tire pressure sensor battery is low or has run out of juice. This sensor will need to be replaced.
A tire pressure sensor has been broken during the installation of new tires or wheels.
A radio frequency disturbance from another vehicle or electronics is interfering with the tire pressure sensors or TPMS module.
Non- BYD approved tire pressure sensors or TPMS module has been installed on the BYD Han.
Low Tire Pressure Light Triggers
Inadequate tire pressure, either excessively high or low.
TPMS sensors with depleted or malfunctioning batteries.
Issues with the TPMS receiver or ECM/ECU/BCM, including software glitches.
Nearby electromagnetic disruptions from other vehicles or devices.
Abrupt shifts in ambient air temperature.
Exceeding the vehicle’s weight capacity or towing limits.
Installation of tire chains.
Extremely dark window tints on the vehicle.
Variations in the temperature of the road surface.
Using non-OEM BYD tires or wheels.
Damage to TPMS sensors during tire changes or maintenance.
Neglecting the BYD Han TPMS reset steps post-tire service.
Tires suffering from punctures or slow leaks.
Physical harm to tires or wheels, like bubbles in the tire or cracked rims.
Improperly installed or defective tire valve stems.
Why Does a Change in Weather Cause the Low Tire Light to Turn On?
The low tire pressure alert in the BYD Han is often activated due to changes in weather. Tire pressure can vary approximately 1 psi for every 10°F shift in the surrounding air temperature. For example, a decrease in temperature by 41°F over the course of a month will result in the tire pressure dropping from 35 Psi to 31 Psi or even lower, which would set off the BYD low tire pressure alert.
BYD Han Tire Inflation
Underinflation
Driving on tires that are underinflated will cause the tire to wear unevenly on the outside of the tread and more quickly.
Overinflation
Driving on tires that are overinflated will create a bumpy ride as well as cause the tread of the tire to wear in the middle instead of evenly throughout.
Cold Tires
Tire pressure on the BYD should only be adjusted or set when the tires are cold. Tires are officially cold before the car has been driven on waiting at least 3 hours after last driving.
Warm Tires
Tire pressure will increase by about 30-40 kPa (4-5 psi) after the BYD has been driven. This means if you adjust your tire pressure when the tires are hot, you will likely over inflate the tires.
BYD Han Air Pressure
TIRE SIZE | FRONT PSI/kPa | REAR PSI/kPa |
245/45R19 | 36/250 | 36/250 |
How Does Tire Pressure Affect BYD Battery Range?
Under-inflated tires increase rolling resistance, forcing the BYD electric motor to expend more energy, thereby reducing the overall range. Keeping tires at the recommended pressure (36psi/250 kPa) not only maximizes the Han EV’s battery range but also contributes to consistent vehicle performance and tire longevity. Tires under-inflated by just 10% can lead to a 3% decrease in battery range.
How to Find a Leaking Tire
Inflate the leaking tire to 40 Psi.
Mix water and liquid soap in a spray bottle.
Generously spray this soapy mixture over the entire tire, paying extra attention to the bead and valve stem regions.
Observe for the formation of bubbles and follow them to their origin to pinpoint the location of the leak.
TPMS Diagnostic Tools
When the tire pressure in all tires is correctly set, and you’ve followed the reset procedure for the BYD Han TPMS but the tire pressure indicator still stays lit or blinks before staying on, use a TPMS diagnostic tool to identify the problem. These diagnostic tools are highly efficient in checking and pinpointing issues with tire pressure sensors. They can evaluate each sensor, providing a detailed report on various aspects such as the sensor’s battery health, signal strength, the temperature of the tire, the sensor’s frequency in megahertz, and its specific location on the vehicle. In cases where the TPMS sensors show signs of a depleted battery or a weak signal, replacement of these sensors is necessary.
BYD Han Tire Tips
Tire rotations should be performed at least once every 10,000 km or 6,000 miles.
Do not mix tire brands or tire sizes.
All 4 tires should be replaced at the same time.
If you use the BYD tire sealant on a leaking tire, have the tire and tire pressure sensor checked for functionality as soon as possible.
