Your BMW 2 Series TPMS (Tire Pressure Monitoring System) is a vital safety feature that ensures your driving experience is as safe and enjoyable as possible. Proper tire pressure is crucial for optimal tire performance, fuel efficiency, and handling. The BMW 2 Series TPMS constantly monitors the tire pressure and alerts you if it drops below the level set by BMW. How Does the BMW 2 Series TPMS Work?

  • The BMW 2 series TPMS uses advanced sensors that are mounted inside each wheel to continuously measure the air pressure of each tire.

  • These sensors wirelessly send data to the car’s onboard computer.

  • The onboard computer calculates the pressure of each tire and compares it to the recommended level.

  • If the pressure in any tire falls below a specific threshold (about 10%-25% below the recommended level set by OEM), the TPMS will illuminate a warning light on the dashboard alerting the driver to the current issue.

  • The BMW 2 series TPMS also displays a message on the dashboard, indicating which tires are underinflated. This helps the driver identify the issue quickly.

  • Once the tire pressure has been adjusted, the TPMS can be manually reset by the driver, following the steps provided above.

  • The TPMS also measures the temperature of each tire to provide more accurate readings and to help improve performance.

When to Reset BMW 2 Series TPMS?

  • Following any tire pressure adjustment, whether inflating or deflating tires.

  • After performing tire rotations, balances, or wheel alignments.

  • When replacing one or more tires.

  • When installing new rims or wheels.(remember to transfer the old sensors to the new wheels to maintain TPMS functionality.)

  • If the tire warning light does not turn off on its own.

  • After switching between seasonal tires, such as switching from summer to winter tires.

  • Following the replacement of the vehicle’s battery. (this may affect the TPMS sensor’s calibration)

  • After jump-starting a dead battery. (this may also affect the TPMS sensor’s calibration)

  • After repairing or replacing any faulty TPMS sensors.

What are Common Causes for BMW 2 Series Tire Pressure Light to Turn On?

  • Temperature changes: Temperature changes such as cold weather or hot weather, can cause the tire pressure to fluctuate and trigger the warning light. – this is the most common cause for tire pressure lights to turn on.

  • Worn-out tires: Tires that have reached the end of their life span can develop slow leaks. Dry rotting tires can slowly lose air.

  • A flat tire or slow leak due to punctures or damage to the tire.

  • A crack in one or more rims/wheels. (This is VERY common in BMW vehicles)

  • Vehicle  weight overload, too much weight in or on the vehicle.

  • Faulty tire pressure sensors: leaking or damaged TPMS sensors. Faulty TPMS sensors can send incorrect readings to the car’s computer.

  • TPMS software or calibration issues. Sometimes software needs to be updated by the dealer.

  • Dying TPMS sensor battery. (Sensor batteries usually last about 5-7 years before TPMS sensors need to be replaced. You can check battery strength with this tool)

  • After jumping a dead battery vehicle battery.

What Happens When Your BMW 2 Series Tires are Underinflated?

When the tires on your BMW 2 series aren’t properly inflated, it can cause a lot of problems. Your fuel efficiency could decrease, and your tire tread might wear out faster than they should. Plus, your BMW 2 series might not handle or brake as well as it should, which could be dangerous. You don’t want to spend extra money on repairs or replacements, and you definitely don’t want to get into an accident. That’s why it’s really important to check your tire pressure regularly and make sure it’s at the right level for your BMW 2 series. We recommend checking your tire pressure at least once a month, and always before you go on long trips. That way, you can drive with confidence and enjoy the ride!
