Steps to Reset the Volvo XC40 TPMS

Step 1: Start Engine

Begin by starting the engine of your Volvo XC40, or activate the RUN mode by turning the ignition switch twice without pressing the brake pedal.

Step 2: Settings

Push the settings button directly underneath the Volvo XC40 dashboard information display screen.

Step 3: Swipe the screen

Swipe across the information display screen once so all the menu options appear on the display.

Step 4: Car Status

Select CAR STATUS from the menu options

Step 5: TPMS

On the left side of the information display screen, choose the ‘TPMS’ option.

Step 6: select STORE PRESSURE

Click the STORE PRESSURE option.

Step 7: Confirmation

A notification will appear that states “Store Tire Pressure” “Press OK after the tire pressure in all four tires has been checked and adjusted”. Select OK.  Following this, another message will appear that reads “Tire Pressure Monitor” “Storing pressure is in progress and will finalize automatically.Press OK.

What Sets Off Your Volvo XC40 Tire Pressure Monitoring System

  • If the Volvo XC40 tire’s inflation pressure falls below the recommended level.

  • When all four tires are not of the same make, brand, or model.

  • If there is a variation in tire sizes among the four wheels.

  • In the event of tire tread damage or structural issues.

  • When one side of the Volvo XC40 bears a greater load than the other.

  • If there is an unequal distribution of weight between the axles, such as during towing.

  • Changes in weather.

  • When a compact spare wheel has been installed.

  • If there have been changes to tire pressure, tire rotations, or replacements.

  • In the presence of snow chains on the tires, which can lead to false system warnings due to alterations in tire circumference.

How Does the Volvo XC40 Tire Pressure Monitoring System Work?

The Volvo XC40 TPMS operates without traditional tire pressure sensors. It relies on the car’s wheel speed sensors to function. Such systems are categorized as indirect TPMS.

Wheel Speed Sensors:

Every wheel has a wheel speed sensor behind it that measures its rotational speed, which determines the speed of the Volvo XC40.

Comparison of Wheel Rotations:

The concept behind the Volvo XC40 TPMS revolves around the idea that a tire with reduced air pressure compared to the others will exhibit a slightly smaller diameter, leading to a faster rotation compared to the other three tires.

The TPMS then assesses and compares the rotational speed of all four wheels. It’s important to note that indirect TPMS is operational exclusively when the Volvo XC40 is in motion, as it relies on wheel speed data to calculate tire air pressure.

Calculating Pressure Differences:

By examining the information obtained from the wheel speed sensors, the Volvo XC40 tire pressure system identifies instances where a single wheel exhibits a sustained increase in rotational speed compared to the remaining wheels. This pattern often signifies a potential decrease in tire air pressure.

Low Tire Pressure Warning Light:

When the tire pressure system detects a notable difference in wheel rotational speed, indicating a potential decrease in tire pressure, it activates a low tire pressure warning light to notify the driver. If this occurs, the Volvo XC40 dashboard will display both a “low tire pressure” warning message and the standard symbol for low tire pressure on the dashboard (yellow exclamation mark).

What Are Common Volvo XC40 Tire Pressure Monitoring System Problems?

The Volvo XC40 TPMS can face issues such as tire pressure inaccuracies and false alerts due to its reliance on wheel speed sensors, not tire pressure sensors. Indirect tire pressure monitoring systems may incorrectly interpret tire rotation data if tire pressure reference values are not recalibrated after tire changes or inflation adjustments. This can lead to false low tire pressure warnings or necessitate a TPMS reset and calibration.

TPMS calibration is crucial for accurate detection of changes in inflation pressure, ensuring the Volvo XC40 TPMS provides reliable alerts and maintains vehicle safety.

Another common problem with Volvo TPMS is the fact that it cannot register tire pressure changes unless the vehicle is moving. Regular air pressure checks and maintenance, including resetting the system and verifying tire pressure against new air pressure values, help mitigate these problems.

Why is the Tire Pressure Light On When The Tires Are Fine?

One frequently encountered scenario where the Volvo XC40 low tire light illuminates, even when the tires are in good condition, arises from the usage of different brand and size tires. For example, if you have Goodyear tires on the front of the vehicle and Michelin on the rear.

Volvo’s indirect TPMS is so sensitive that even the slightest variation in tire size or brand can trigger the activation of the low tire pressure warning. Therefore, it is imperative for all four tires to be consistent in terms of tire size, brand, make, and model.

What To Do if the Volvo XC40 Low Tire Light Won't Turn Off When the Tire Pressure is Correct?

If your Volvo XC40 tire pressure warning light does not turn off after resetting the tire pressure monitoring system and all the tyre pressure is at the recommended air levels follow this process:

  1. Overinflate each tire by 8-10 Psi.

  2. Drive for 5-10 minutes.

  3. Release the excess air pressure from each tire so that they are all back to the recommended air pressure levels.

  4. Drive again for 5-10 minutes.

  5. Follow the Volvo XC40 TPMS reset and calibration process.

Volvo XC40 FAQ

Can the Volvo XC40 TPMS Be Disabled?

The Volvo XC40 tire pressure monitoring system cannot be disabled.

Is it Safe to drive with Low Tire Pressure Light On?

No, it is not safe to drive the Volvo XC40 when the low tire pressure warning is on. If your Volvo tire pressure light is on, pull over, look over each tire and wheel, and manually check the air pressure in each tire with a tire pressure gauge.

Will a Change in Weather Trigger the Volvo Low Tire Pressure Warning?

Yes, a change in air temperature over any amount of time can cause the Volvo low tire pressure warning light. Always check and adjust tire pressure when the tires are in a cold state.

How Far Can You Drive With the TPMS Light On?

There is no specific safe duration or distance for driving the Volvo XC40 with the low tire pressure indicator illuminated. Our recommendation is to ascertain the cause of the low tire pressure warning before resuming your journey.

What Happens If a Wheel Speed Sensor Stops Working?

If any of your Volvo XC40 wheel speed sensors stop working, the tire pressure light, ABS light, traction control light will all illuminate on the dashboard.
