VOLVO V90

How to Reset and Troubleshoot the Volvo V90 Low Tire Pressure Light (2015-2025)

How Do You Reset the Volvo V90 TPMS?

If your Volvo V90 tire pressure warning light is on, check and adjust each tire’s inflation pressure before following the Volvo low tire pressure warning reset procedure.

2017-2024 Volvo V90 TPMS Reset Procedure

  1. Start your Volvo V90 engine or put the ignition in RUN mode by turning the engine start switch twice without applying the brake pedal.

  2. Press the Settings/Menu button directly underneath the information display screen on the dashboard.

  3. Swipe your finger across the information display screen until all of the menu options become visible.

  4. Select CAR STATUS from the Menu options.

  5. Select TPMS on the left side of the information display screen.

  6. Select STORE PRESSURE.

  7. A message will appear that reads “Store Tire Pressure” “Press OK after the tire pressure in all four tires has been checked and adjusted”. Press OK. Another prompt will appear that reads “Tire Pressure Monitor” “Storing pressure is in progress and will finalize automatically.” Press OK

  8. Drive your Volvo V90 for at least 10 minutes above 25 Mph.

What Sets Off Your Volvo V90 Tire Pressure Monitoring System?

  • Significant Tire Pressure Changes: A major deviation from the manufacturer-recommended tire pressure levels can activate the tire warning light.

  • Air Temperature Shifts: Variations in external temperature can cause the air inside tires to expand or contract, potentially setting off the TPMS warning.

  • Tire Wear or Damage: Any form of tire damage, such as punctures, cuts, or significant wear, that leads to air loss can trigger the TPM system’s alert.

  • Inconsistent Tire Maintenance: Failing to regularly check and adjust the Volvo V90’s tire pressures to align with Volvo’s recommendations can cause the system to signal a low tire warning.

  • Non-Uniform Tires: Installing tires that are different in size or type from those that Volvo specifies for the V90 can affect the accuracy of the TPMS and trigger the tire light.

  • Calibration Discrepancies: The TPMS requires proper calibration, especially after tire rotations, replacements, or air pressure adjustments. If the system is not correctly recalibrated, it may falsely indicate a tire pressure issue.

How Does the Volvo V90 Tire Pressure Monitoring System Work?

The Volvo V90 Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) does not use traditional tire pressure sensors. Instead, it cleverly utilizes the car’s existing Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) sensors to keep an eye on tire pressure indirectly. Here’s how it works:

  • Wheel Speed Sensors: Integral to the ABS, these sensors detect the speed of each wheel. They are located behind each wheel or in the wheel hub.

  • Detecting Low Inflation Pressure: A tire with lower air pressure spins faster than its properly inflated counterparts. The Volvo V90 TPMS tracks these speed differences to infer tire pressure inflation levels.

  • Alerting the Driver: If a tire spins noticeably faster, indicating low pressure, the system triggers a low tire pressure warning. This includes a dashboard message and a yellow exclamation mark symbol, often specifying which tire is affected.

  • Resetting After Inflation: Once the tire pressure is corrected, the Volvo V90 TPMS will need resetting to continue accurate monitoring.

Common Volvo V90 TPMS Problems

  1. Inaccuracy: Differences in tire wear, size, or gradual pressure changes can lead to incorrect air pressure readings.

  2. False Alarms: Varying driving conditions might trigger unnecessary low tyre alerts or miss real tyre pressure issues.

  3. Sensor Dependency: The system’s effectiveness is tied to the health of the ABS and wheel speed sensors.

  4. Calibration Needs: The Volvo V90 TPMS requires recalibration after tire maintenance to ensure accuracy.

  5. Limited Information: Indirect TPMS may not specify which tire is problematic or the precise issue.

  6. Tire Maintenance Sensitivity: Using tires of different sizes, brands, or conditions can affect the tire pressure systems reliability.

Why is My Volvo V90 Tire Pressure Light On When the Tires are Fine?

The Volvo V90 tire pressure light may illuminate even if the tires seem okay and are set to the tire pressure reference values on the door. This can be attributed to using different brands or sizes of tires as well as tire wear. The indirect TPMS is sensitive to even slight variations in tire size or brand, leading to the activation of the Volvo low tire pressure alert. Uniformity in the size, brand, make, and model of all four tires is necessary to avoid this issue.

What to Do if the Volvo Low Tire Pressure Warning Reset Does Not Work?

If your Volvo V90 TPMS warning light remains on even after verifying and adjusting the tire pressures to the correct values, the system needs recalibration. Double check the air pressure levels align with the tire pressure reference values on the driver side door panel and then follow the Volvo V90 TPMS calibration process. If it does not work the first time, release 10 psi from each tire, inflate each tire, drive the car for 5-10 minutes, and then follow the tire pressure system reset procedure again. This can sometimes take a few attempts.

If the TPMS light persists, there may be an issue with a wheel speed sensor or the onboard computer system.

Volvo V90 FAQ

Can the Volvo V90 TPMS Be Disabled?

The Volvo V90 tire pressure monitoring system cannot be disabled.

Is it Safe to drive with Low Tire Pressure Light On?

Driving with the low tire pressure warning light active is discouraged. Should the Volvo V90 Cross Country tire light turn on, promptly and safely pull over to check each tire’s air pressure using a digital tire gauge and visually inspect tires and wheels for irregularities.

Will a Change in Weather Trigger the Volvo Low Tire Pressure Warning?

Yes, variations in air temperature can trigger the Volvo’s low tire pressure warning. To avoid this, always check and adjust the tire pressure when the tires are cold.

How Far Can You Drive With the TPMS Light On?

Driving the Volvo V90 with the low tyre pressure light on has no safe set time or distance. It’s best to identify and fix the cause of the warning before continuing driving.

What Happens If a Wheel Speed Sensor Stops Working?

If a Volvo V90 wheel speed sensor fails, the dashboard will light up with the tire pressure, ABS, and traction control indicators.
