Why is My Tire Pressure Light on When My Tires are Ok?
If your Lexus’s tire pressure light is on but the tires seem fine, it could be due to sensor issues, temperature changes, recent tire service, or even the spare tire being monitored.
Here’s what you can do:
Check Tire Pressure: Use a tire pressure gauge to check all tires manually, including the spare. Make sure every tire is at the exact recommended pressures.
Reset the TPMS: If pressures are correct but the light persists, try resetting the TPMS. Occasionally this can take more than one attempt.
Check the Sensors: Use a TPMS scan tool to check each sensor is functioning correctly.
How Does the Lexus TPMS Work?
Lexus vehicles are equipped with a direct Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) that uses a sensor mounted inside each tire to monitor its air pressure and temperature. The sensors wirelessly transmit this real-time data to the Lexus’s onboard computer system via a TPMS receiver module.
The onboard computer analyzes the received information from all four tires against Lexus’ recommended safe pressure limits. If the pressure in any tire drops below the specified threshold, the computer triggers the low tire pressure warning light on the dashboard to illuminate, alerting the driver.
The direct TPMS provides precise pressure readings from the sensors inside each tire, rather than estimating based on wheel speeds like indirect systems. This allows for early detection of underinflated tires before they become a safety hazard.
Why is My Lexus Tire Light On?
One or more tires have low air pressure below the recommended level.
There is a slow leak or puncture in one of the tires causing air loss.
Cold weather can cause the air inside the tires to contract, lowering the pressure temporarily. – Remember, this can happen over time.
The TPMS sensor battery in one or more tires is dead or failing.
A TPMS sensor is damaged or not functioning properly.
The TPMS system needs to be reset or recalibrated after tire rotation or replacement.
There is a wiring issue or fault in the TPMS control module or receiver.
The TPMS system has not been properly programmed or synchronized with the new tire sensors after replacement.
Does Lexus Tell You Which Tire is Low
Yes, use the steering wheel arrow buttons to scroll through the display screen menu until you reach the current tire pressure screen.
My Lexus Tire Pressure Light is On, How Far Can I Drive?
You can drive for short distances, but it’s important to get it checked soon. Driving with underinflated tires can lead to premature wear, overheating, and even blowouts. Keep a portable tire pressure pump in your vehicle to enable you to check and inflate the tires under any circumstances.
Why is the Lexus Low Tire Light Flashing on the Dash?
If the low tire pressure light is flashing on the dashboard, this means one or more tire pressure sensors have stopped communicating with the vehicles on board computer system.
What Can I Do if the Lexus Tire Light Won't Turn Off?
Disconnect battery negative terminal for a few seconds to reset the Lexus computer system, potentially clearing TPMS faults.
Deflate each tire by around 10 psi, then reinflate to recommended pressure; drive for at least 10 minutes at 20+ mph and then follow TPMS reset procedure.
Use a TPMS diagnostic tool to scan sensors and identify any malfunctioning units, which is often the cause of warning light.
Inspect for leaks by spraying soapy water around tire beads and valve stems after inflating to locate any air leaks.
Do Lexus Vehicles Have a TPMS Sensor in the Spare Tire?
Some Lexus vehicles do have TPMS sensors in the spare tire. If your Lexus has a full sized spare tire (a tire that is the same size as the other 4 tires) or the spare tire has a metal valve stem, there is a tire pressure sensor inside the spare.
Will the Spare Tire Set Off the Low Tire Light?
If your spare tire has a tire pressure sensor in it and the tire pressure is below the recommended air pressure (check your owner’s manual or door sticker), it will trigger a low tire warning light. If your spare tire is a donut or does not have a sensor in it and you mount it to your Lexus, the tire light will flash and then stay on.
When Do My TPMS Sensors Need to be Replaced?
If a tire pressure sensor stops working it needs to be replaced with a new one. A TPMS diagnostic tool is required to determine which sensor is faulty.
