How Do You Reset the Volvo XC60 Tire Pressure Light?
2017-2025 Volvo XC60 Tire Pressure Monitoring System Reset Procedure
Step 1: Start Engine or put ignition into Run
Start the engine of your Volvo XC60 or put the ignition into RUN mode by turning the engine start switch twice, ensuring you do not press the brake pedal while doing so.
Step 2: Settings
Push the Settings/Menu button located right below the dashboard information display screen.
Step 3: Swipe the screen
Swipe your finger over the information display screen so all the menu options appear.
Step 4: Car Status
Choose the CAR STATUS option from the menu selections.
Step 5: TPMS
Select the TPMS option, which is situated on the left-hand side of the information display screen.
Step 6: select STORE PRESSURE
Click on the STORE PRESSURE option.
Step 7: Confirmation
You will see a message stating, “Store Tire Pressure” followed by “Press OK after the tire pressure in all four tires has been checked and adjusted.” Click on OK. Then, a second message will appear saying, “Tire Pressure Monitor” along with “Storing pressure is in progress and will finalize automatically.” Again, select OK.
Step 8: Drive
The calibration process will be fully finished once the Volvo XC60 reaches a speed of approximately 22 MPH. In case you turn off the car before the calibration is finalized, you’ll need to repeat the calibration steps. If the process is unsuccessful, you’ll see a message: “Calibration unsuccessful. Try Again.” Remember, you can only initiate the calibration process when the engine is on and the car is stationary. Drive your Volvo XC60 for at least 10 minutes above 22 Mph after completing the TPMS calibration process was successful.
2008-2016 Volvo XC60 Tire Pressure Monitoring System Reset Procedure
Press the MY CAR button under the Volvo XC60 dashboard display screen.
Hit the OK button.
Navigate down and choose Tire Monitor by pressing OK.
Click on START CALIBRATION and then press OK.
A prompt will display, stating “Press OK after the tire pressure in all four tires have been checked and adjusted.”
Confirm by pressing the OK button.
A confirmation prompt will then appear, saying “Calibration process started and will finalize automatically.”
Proceed to drive your Volvo XC60 for at least 10 minutes at speeds over 22 mph AFTER the TPMS process has successfully calibrated.
What Sets Off the Volvo XC60 Tire Pressure Light?
When a tire’s inflation pressure is significantly low.
If any of the four tires differ in brand, make, or model.
When any Volvo XC60 tires are not of the same size.
In the event of tread damage or structural defects in a tire.
If one side of the Volvo XC60 is carrying a heavier load than the other.
When one axle is under more weight than the other, such as during towing.
Driving with the spare tire.
Any time a tire or wheel is replaced.
After the wheels have been rotated.
If snow chains are applied to the tires, which might trigger false alarms due to the increased circumference from the chains.
What Are Common Volvo XC60 Tire Pressure Monitoring System Problems?
Indirect Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems (TPMS) in Volvo vehicles use the ABS sensors to monitor tyre pressure indirectly. Common issues with these systems include inaccurate readings due to changes in tire dimensions or uneven wear, leading to false TPMS warnings about low inflation pressure.
Calibration problems can occur if the system isn’t reset after tire maintenance, affecting the tire pressure reference values used by the system. Since indirect TPMS does not measure pressure directly, it can be less responsive to sudden drops in tyre pressure, potentially delaying alerts about low inflation pressure.
Regular manual checks of tyre pressure are recommended to ensure safety and maintain correct tire pressure reference values, even if no TPMS warning is present.
How Does the Volvo XC60 TPMS Work?
The Volvo XC60 tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) functions using an indirect method. This means it determines the tire pressure of the Volvo XC60 by utilizing data from the wheel speed sensors, instead of relying on individual tire pressure sensors in each wheel like in direct tire pressure monitoring systems.
Wheel Speed Sensors
The Volvo XC60 wheel speed sensors function by monitoring and reporting the rotational speed of each wheel to the vehicle’s on board computer system, enabling various systems like ABS, traction control, and indirect TPMS to operate effectively. Wheel speed sensors sit behind or inside each wheel hub to keep track of each wheel’s current speed.
Comparison of Wheel Rotation Speed
The indirect TPMS works based on the principle that a tire with lower air pressure will have a slightly reduced diameter, causing it to rotate faster than the other tires. This method evaluates and compares the rotation speeds of all four tires using four wheel speed sensors. This is why the Volvo XC60 tire pressure system can only measure the air pressure in each tire accurately when the SUV is moving.
Calculating Tire Air Pressure Differences
By analyzing and comparing the data collected from the wheel speed sensors, the Volvo XC60 TPMS can detect when one wheel consistently rotates faster than the others, indicating a possible reduction in that tire’s air pressure.
Low Tire Pressure Warning Light
If the tire pressure monitoring system observes a significant difference in the rotational speeds of the wheels, suggesting a drop in tire pressure, it triggers a low air pressure warning light on the dashboard to inform the driver. In these situations, the Volvo XC60 will show a “low tire pressure” warning message along with the standard low tire pressure warning icon (a yellow exclamation point) on the dashboard.
Why is the Tire Pressure Light On When the Tires Are Fine?
A common cause the Volvo XC60 low tire pressure light turns on, even when the tires seem in good condition, is the use of tires with different brands or sizes. The indirect TPMS is sensitive to even small variations in tire size or brand, which can lead to the activation of the low tire pressure warning. It’s crucial to ensure that all four tires are identical in size, brand, make, and model.
What To Do If the Volvo Low Tire Pressure Light Won't Turn Off With the Correct Tire Pressures
If your Volvo XC60 low tire pressure light does not turn off after resetting the TPMS and all the tire air pressure is at the recommended air levels follow this process:
Overinflate each tire by 8-10 Psi.
Drive the vehicle for 5-10 minutes.
Release the excess air pressure from each tire so that each tire is back to the recommended air pressure levels.
Drive the vehicle again for 5-10 minutes.
Follow the Volvo XC60 TPMS calibration process.

Volvo XC60 FAQ
Is it okay to drive with the Volvo XC60 Low Tire Pressure Light On?
No, we recommend NOT to operate your Volvo XC60 if the low tire pressure warning is illuminated. In the event the low tire pressure light turns on, it’s important to safely pull over and manually check each tire’s air pressure with a digital tire pressure gauge. Additionally, visually inspect the tires and wheels for any anomalies like a screw stuck in the tire.
How Far Can You Drive With the TPMS Light On?
There isn’t a defined “safe” time or distance to continue driving when the low tire pressure light is on. It’s advisable to determine the reason behind the low air pressure warning prior to resuming your driving.
What Happens If a Wheel Speed Sensor Stops Working?
If a wheel speed sensor is not working correctly the tyre pressure monitoring system will also not work properly. This will cause the low tire pressure fault warning to flash and cause the TPMS to report inaccurate air pressure readings on the information display.
